We Beat Valero!
Last week, we scored a major victory. Valero and Amports have agreed to stop polluting the Bay with petcoke, a toxic fossil fuel byproduct.
It all started a few years ago when a pollution tipster led our field investigators to capture drone images of petcoke pollution (pictured, above) at the Port of Benicia. So, we took action.
Valero and Amports are now legally required to stop dumping petcoke in the Bay and to pay $2.38 million to grassroots nonprofits to make up for their past pollution.

Getting Exxon to Come Clean About Plastic
Last month, we joined forces with Surfrider, Sierra Club, and Heal the Bay (in LA) against ExxonMobil, the world’s largest producer of single-use plastic polymers.
We’re demanding accountability from Exxon, a company that has spent years misleading the public to believe that plastic can be recycled safely.
In reality, plastic is rarely recycled, persists in the environment, and leaks toxic chemicals that are known to harm human health and the Bay.

Bills for the Bay: 2024 Edition
Every year, our team of experts reviews California’s proposed bills for potential effects on San Francisco Bay and local communities.
This year, nine of the bills that we supported passed and were signed by Governor Newsom, and all of the bills that we opposed died in the legislature!

Take Action for Climate: Vote Yes on Prop 4
One of the most sweeping bonds in state history—Proposition 4—is on the ballot.
The proposition includes, among other things, financing for water recycling and reuse, habitat restoration, and park expansion. Prop 4 also provides funding to prepare and mitigate for climate disasters like extreme heat, floods, and wildfire.
For all these reasons, we support Prop 4!

In SF with Blue Tech and Mayoral Candidates
Last week, Baykeeper director Sejal Choksi-Chugh moderated a panel for SF Blue Tech posing questions to San Francisco mayoral candidates about the Bay, climate change, and more.
The event, produced by SF Blue Tech and sponsored by the South Beach Yacht Club, featured a lively discussion of the environmental issues facing the city today.
The candidates agreed that the Bay should be better protected and that San Francisco needs to improve its wastewater infrastructure and be better hosts to the charter boat community.
