Under the guise of reducing carbon emissions, developers are proposing a dangerous carbon waste dumping scheme that poses a threat to Bay Area communities and wetlands.
The project, officially called the Montezuma NorCal Carbon Hub, would compress and pump carbon waste from Bay Area refineries into the Montezuma wetlands through complex pipelines. The pipeline—45 miles of it potentially underwater—would extend from Contra Costa County to Solano County, affecting communities and ecosystems along the way.
Carbon pipeline leaks have been known to cause seizures, asphyxiation, and even death. In addition, combustion engines like gas powered automobiles, ambulances, and fire trucks will be inoperable, leaving people stranded in an emergency. And, contrary to the project’s greenwashed messaging, the project would not significantly reduce carbon emissions. Instead, it would allow refineries to continue to keep on polluting.
