Defending Bay Fishes Against the Trump Administration
We just sued the Trump Administration for violating the Endangered Species Act.  Â
The Bureau of Reclamation takes so much water out of rivers and the Delta that native fish populations have crashed. After precipitous declines of the Bay’s seven endangered fish species, the Bureau violated its permits and killed more Central Valley Steelhead, Green Sturgeon, and Chinook Salmon than the law allowed.
The lawsuit, which we filed with the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the River, comes at a critical time, as the Bureau prepares to increase water diversions.

Court Dismisses Exxon Lawsuit Against Baykeeper
In 2024, Baykeeper and our allies filed a lawsuit against Exxon for its role in the Bay’s plastic pollution problem. A few months later Exxon sued us back, contending we “defamed” the company and interfered with its business interests.
But Exxon was unsuccessful. In February, a federal court in Texas dismissed the case. As our executive director Sejal Choksi-Chugh said in a statement, “Exxon’s lawsuit felt like an attempt to silence its critics. But these kinds of intimidation tactics will not work.“
Undeterred, our original case against Exxon continues to move forward.

Protecting the Bay Against Harmful Sand Mining
Sand is a vital—and underappreciated—part of the Bay’s ecosystem. Sand fortifies our beaches and shorelines and provides habitat for countless creatures, including Dungeness Crab.
But the State Lands Commission is moving ahead with a plan to sell off huge quantities of the Bay’s sand to private companies, despite extensive scientific evidence that doing so will be harmful.
That’s why we advocated for the Commission to change course. But they did not listen. And now we’re suing.

Take Action to Stop Toxic Dust on 3/24
Did you know that the Bay Area has some of the most polluted air in the country? This pollution harms our communities—and the Bay’s water quality.
One of the main sources is “fugitive” dust: small, harmful particles from industrial facilities that handle hazardous materials like coal or petroleum coke.
But now there’s an opportunity for stronger guardrails on this dangerous form of pollution. Join Baykeeper and our partners for a webinar next Tuesday, March 24, to learn more and what you can do!

Celebrate Earth Month with Baykeeper
Join us on Saturday, May 9 at the Dolphin Club for the 2026 Bay Celebration! Tickets are on sale now for the Bay party of the year. Meet and mingle while enjoying Bay views, sustainable seafood, and pours from Obsidian Wine Co. We’ll celebrate your impact and stand up for a cleaner, healthier Bay.
Throughout Earth Month, take part in the Clean Bay Challenge by volunteering in your own neighborhood to pick up trash before it reaches the Bay. Sign up to volunteer.
And the International Ocean Film Festival returns to Cowell Theater April 10-12. Baykeeper will be there as an Ocean Hero partner, so stop by our table.Â
Check out our events page for more details. Â

Watch the 2026 State of the Bay
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 State of the Bay!
Together, we discussed how federal environmental rollbacks, new harmful projects, emerging pollution sources, and escalating climate impacts are shaping the future of the Bay Area.
Watch the recording to learn more about these threats and how you can join Baykeeper to protect the Bay.
